Del Aire third graders thought a news crew was filming their PE class. Then the Chargers showed up. Coach Lauren Shakstad walked away with $10,000 for her program, a jersey with her name on it, and a story her students will be telling for years.

Report cards look different this year. Reminder to families: e-scooters are not permitted on WUSD campuses. We know there may be some confusion about whether the District’s recently shared e-bike policy also applies to e-scooters. E-scooters and e-bikes are treated differently under California law and District policy.

While Class I and II e-bikes are permitted after registering with the District, California law regulates e-scooters as motorized scooters rather than electric bicycles. State law requires e-scooter riders to have a valid driver’s license or instruction permit, which puts them out of reach for most of our students. The District’s e-bike policy covers electric bicycles only.

The Wiseburn Education Foundation has released its 2025-26 Impact Report, capping a milestone year as the foundation celebrates 30 years of supporting Wiseburn students. Founded in 1996 by parents and community leaders, WEF raised $398,225 this year to benefit more than 5,000 students across the district's schools, from preschool through the high school academies. Highlights include 27 teacher innovation grants totaling more than $27,000, 475 new instruments and cases for the district's music program, and support for 50 middle school students who designed and built AI applications at a two-day hackathon with Da Vinci Schools. During the July 16 Wiseburn USD school board meeting, the Board of Trustees adopted a new board policy and administrative regulation on student personal electronic devices, establishing that cell phones and similar devices may not be used during the school day — including instructional time, recess, lunch, passing periods, and assemblies — unless specifically authorized. Phone-free school days are linked to improved focus, stronger academic engagement, and better student mental health, and they encourage more face-to-face connection during recess and lunch. The policy includes exceptions for medical needs and other circumstances authorized by the principal or designee.
